22) St Pierre de Chartreuse
One of the newest mtb resorts to appear in the French Alps. They have been pushing the mountain biking hard since 3 years ago, putting some real effort in to building new stuff on a small budget. They haven’t got the biggest mountain but have made much better use of it than a lot of bigger resorts. Its not a big resort but is defiantly worth a 1 or 2 day visit. Especially if your heading towards Alpe d’Huez or Les Deux Alpes.
The nearest international airport to St Pierre de Chartreuse is Grenoble 30mins (there is also Chambery 40mins)

The Riding
All the tracks are well signposted straight from the high speed 6-man chairlift, the blue, red and black tracks are all interlinked, meaning you can choose your favourite sections of each on the way down.
Green: ’Le Chartreuse Verte’ Easy, flat fireroads to start with, to get Mum and the kids warmed up, turning in to flowy singletrack after the halfway point. Perfect for novices and beginners, but good fun for more advanced riders looking for some end of day cruising runs.
Blue: Fast fireroad sections, a few berms and bus-stops, a little disjointed but good fun for all levels.
Look out for the ‘secret’ short singletrack sections that sneak off in to the trees.
Red: ‘La Rouge du Battour’: Berms, jumps, high speed sections, this is the most fun track by far, some technical sections, but above all a really good flow.
Black: ‘La Pro de L’Ours’: This track reminded me of the classic ‘Anne-Caro’ downhill in Chatel, If you can make it through the first rock section on your bike your doing well, if you do it with your feet on even better! Then steep chutes in to catch berms. After the first steep section its easier from there on, but still with some interesting jumps and technical drops to keep you on your toes.
Bike Park: The Red and Black runs both head in to the ‘Bike Park’, Its not the great but a few decent drops and jumps with good sized landings for practicing jumps, with a big left-hand wall ride.
Track map: The green and blue pistes need updating on the map, but red and blacks are still accurate.

Bike Shop/Restaurant: Theres a small bike shop out the back of a van, with most spares and
tools to help keep you riding in case of any mechanicals, also a small Restaurant/Café selling drinks, paninis, meals, ice
creams. etc. with a team of very friendly ladies behind the counter.
Events: St Pierre has hosted the final of the Coupe de Rhone Alpes regional
series for the last 3 years, utilising the top of the red course, and
lower black sections (Coupe de Rhone Alpes 2/3 October 2010)
Winter Snow races!! In the winter season, they hold floodlit, 4x snow races, normally every 2
weeks on a Wednesday evening.
Hopefully we will have some footage from these next winter.
