Italy

4) Livigno

Home of the 2005 World Championships and at an altitude of 1815 m Livigno is known as Little Tibet.  The town is spread out, but easy to get around on foot or bike.  It is an old Alpine village set amongst the spectacular and wild mountains of the Stelvio National Park in the Italian Alps. It is also now home to the Swatch BikePark.

Bordered on three sides by Switzerland, Livigno's neighbouring resorts are St Moritz, Poschiavo and Bormio.  Collectively, this area is known as the Alta Rezia and excellent facilities across the board make Livigno one of Italy's top BikeParks.

Nearest airport: Zurich & Milan, both being approx 200km.

As well as being home home to the 2005 MTB World Championships, Livigno also hosted the 2004 MTB World Cup and the annual Transalp cycle races.  There are 2 lifts out of Livigno, the Mottolino and the Carosello 3000, both are bubble cars suitable for mountain bikers.

Livigno has been home to many famous cycling legends who have lived and trained here - Lance Armstrong, Marco Pantani, Hans Rey and Paula Pezzo.  With over 1500 KM of amazing singletrack covering an area of over 10 000 sq km and the Kona Groove Approved Downhill Park, Livigno is a strong contender for any summer break - its Tax Free status is also a bonus!

The trails take you out to remote, high exposed Alpine singletrail, through technical forest switchbacks and over mountain passes.  On the Livigno side, the trails tend to be less rocky, through forests and high mountain paths, while on the Swiss side the terrain is a lot rockier.

DOWNHILL
In Livigno there is the Mottolino Kona Groove Approved Downhill Park with a vertical descent of over 500 m.  There are a number of freeride tracks packed with banked turns, tables, small doubles and forest sections.  The course takes you back to the cablecar station.

FREERIDE
There is a Freeride tour, the Alta Rezia 20 000 m, pioneered by Jans Rey and Thomas Frischknecht.  This takes you from 3100 m down to 400 m and is achievable if you commit to staying around for 5 days riding.  The tour takes you on exposed trails under glaciers, before finding your own route down to the rifugio, where you rest your head.  This is a technical trail Freeriding as opposed to built stunts and jumps.

CROSS-COUNTRY
All the Cross Country trails are specifically designed for mountain bikers... expect long days, big climbs and endless descents from 3100 m down to 400 m on fast flowing singletrack.
