Spain, Portugal & Canary Islands

3) Tenerife

The beauty of Tenerife is that it has year round sunshine and unique riding surfaces. Being a major holiday destination, there are plenty of options of where to stay.

Most of the trails and the BikePark are located on the north side of the island.

The capital, Puerto de la Cruz, is handy for Mount Teide, an area popular with older holiday makers, but, if you are here to ride, that should not bother you!

Nearest airport: TFS, Reina Sofia in the South and TFN, Los Rodeos in the North.

 What does Tenerife to offer?

 Cross Country
 Beginner & Advanced
 Downhill  Advanced
 Freeride  Intermediate
 Cable Car
 -
 Gondola  -
 Chairlift  -
 Connected to  Uplift

The uplift in the BikePark is quick and efficient, but for the natural trails you will either have to hire a van or use the bus service which runs once a day.

The set up in Tenerife is a little different to many resorts in Europe as there are no specific bike trail maps.  At present, riders have to put in the work to find the top of the trails, (buy a map, speak to locals, hire a guide and ask the BikePark to point you in the right direction). If you do this, you will ride some of the most varied, technical trails there are... the views are volcanic landscapes views are pretty amazing too!  The trails are only suited to advanced riders due to the amount of loose rock.

The descents on the whole are not easy on Tenerife as the surface is so rocky and loose.  On the weekends though, when the BikePark is open, there are some easier runs. The trail from high up in the national park down to Arafo is a highly technical route over very varied terrain.

DOWNHILL
For some Downhill riding, take the bus from Puerto de la Cruz up to Mount Teide (summit is 12 000 ft +) and take the trail from Portillo back down which is an hour plus descent.  Other runs ending in Guimar and Arafo are of similar lengths but require shuttling.  Hiring a van between groups of 4 or more is the best way.  Friday, Saturday and Sunday should be spent in the bikepark.

FREERIDE
BikePark
Tenerife has a whole range of jumps, drops and northshore obstacles, together with 3 Downhill runs and a kilometre-long biker cross track.  There are some dirt jump trails under construction and some in the nearby town along with a skatepark and BMX track.  If you have a hardtail and want to ride these tracks the owner of the bikepark will point you in the right direction.

CROSS-COUNTRY
As well as numerous unmarked routes there is miles of Cross Country tours marked out on some of the maps available.  Much of the routes are on double track and dirt roads, but it also takes in some sublime contouring singletrack through the Coronal Forestal.

The buses up to Mount Teide can be very busy any day but especially on the weekends so it is best to get there early.

 Bike Park Opens
 All year round
Lift Opening Times  10:00 until sunset (always check)
Lift Prices  Day pass 20 €
