11) Saas Fee
Saas Fee is an insanely picturesque resort. Sitting in the next valley along from Zermatt, it is a traditional Swiss village with beautifully winding, car-free streets surrounded by towering 4000 metre peaks such as the Allalinhorn and the Dom and a glacier that appears to hang right over the town.
The singletrack is world class, and the resort manages to balance the demands of the modern summer and winter sports scene with the needs of the fondue-supping tourists who also make up a large part of the clientele. Being home of the crazy Glacier race, Saas Fee offers some classic trail riding in unspoilt surroundings.

There are 3 lifts through the Saas Fee valley open to bikers; the Morenia, the Hannig and the Furggstalden. No cars make for a peaceful valley and it is a cheaper alternative to neighbouring Zermatt.
DOWNHILL
The
main Downhill route in Saas Fee is the Morenia run which starts at the
intermediate station at 2500 m and drops 800 m vertically over 7.8 km.
The other trails that can be accessed from the lifts are best suited to
a freeride or longer travel trail bike as most contain some climbing
along their route.
FREERIDE
Saas Fee does not have a Freeride park.
CROSS-COUNTRY
There
are over 70 km of marked Cross Country routes through the Saas Fee
valley and many have the option of skipping out the climbs by using the
lifts, while others head out into corners of the valley where you will
have to climb under your own steam. The routes are all mapped but you can arrange for a MTB guide from the tourist office.
Saas
Fee is where the crazy Saas Fee Glacier race is held, on the
first week of April, down a 9 km piste run with a Le Mans style mass start and the fasted guys hitting
speeds of over 60 mph. The resort is quite close to Zermatt and the two make a perfect trail riding break.
